Want to do your own Demo car?
Here are a couple piececes of advice:
- Its ALOT of work! Between my brother and I think we have about 150 man
hours invested in this car.
- It takes some $$$, get as many sponsors as you can. It takes about 15 minutes
to paint there name on the car. Make sure you get at least $75 to make it
worth your effort to put there name on the car.
- You will also need a fair amount of steel for the roll cage and door re-inforcements.
If you can get ahold of a plow or something that you can strip the steel from,
that would be great.
- Stripping a car generates alot of garbage, I think we filled the garbage
cans to the brim 4 times with seat cushions, carpeting, and various other
unneeded items.
- Do you want to do the demo, or just the derby? We quickly decided to only
do the derby, simply because of the amount of work involved to get the car
ready, we didn't want to total it. Tools required:
- A welder
- A torch - VERY helpfull
- Sawzall Getting the car
- We found the best rescource to find a car is craigslist. You will want
to get something that runs, under $200. I looked for a car that was rear ended
or roll over. People will sell them for whatever they can get on Craigslist.
Old Police cars (Crown Victoria's) are a good choice if you can find a wrecked
one. Don't pick up on that needs work for more then $50, its so easy to sink
$100 in parts alone, and you still have to get the car ready for the Derby.
